5Qs About the Geriatric Mental Health Webinar Series

One of several new courses launching from CAMH’s Education Services is the Geriatric Mental Health Webinar. Sandra Bennet, one of our Community Health and Engagement Specialists, gives us a little background on the project.


Who are you and what is your position at CAMH?

My name is Sandra Bennet and I am a part of CAMH Education’s Community and Continuing Education Program. I am working in partnership with the Geriatric Mental Health Program, a team of academic scientists, practitioners, educators and researchers.

What project were you involved with?

Our planning team is pleased to announce a new education event, the Geriatric Mental Health Webinar Series: Updates in Dementia Care.

The webinar series will be launched on March 1, 2017 and includes four one-hour, interactive webinars, with a focus on research and innovative approaches to managing and improving the quality of care for patients with dementia.

Each webinar is scheduled over the lunch hour on March 1, 8, 21 and 29, 2017.  The presentation topics are:

March 1, 2017: Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD): A sequential medication treatment algorithm for agitation and aggression, how it works and how it was put together

March 8, 2017: Is there a psychiatrist in the house? Home-based collaborative care for the frail elderly

March 21, 2017: An interprofessional model of care for clients with dementia: Complex case presentation

Match 29, 2017: The role of non-pharmacological interventions in dementia care

What is the goal of this project?

The series provides an interdisciplinary platform to discuss the most recent innovations designed to improve the quality of care for patients with dementia. It brings together academic scientists, practitioners, educators and researchers to share experiences, and highlight the latest research and expert opinions on management of dementia at CAMH.

Who is this project geared toward?

This series is for all health care professionals, allied health care workers and caregivers working with older adults. This includes:

  • physicians
  • psychiatrists
  • social workers
  • occupational and recreational therapists
  • personal support workers
  • registered nurses/nurse practitioners
  • advance practice clinicians/advance practice nurses
  • case managers
  • long-term care administrators
  • students who are interested in dementia care.
